History of C-FBWZ
Turbo Buccaneers, either those factory built or later modified in the field, have always been rare and highly desired in the Lake World for their superior performance, especially “hot and high”. They use a very dependable and very durable RAYJAY turbo and wastegate system that requires little in the way of maintenance if used on a regular basis and the wastegate is kept lubricated with a small amount of trusty Mouse Milk. (A secret that has been used by shops for many decades.) The power of the turbo is very impressive in maintaining boost even off of high lakes or in the mountains. Its simple operation makes it easy and safe to use with proper training. Like all Turbo’s, the key to longevity is frequent use, using an appropriate amount of boost and ALWAYS allowing three minutes for cool down before shut-down. The latter is critical to preventing the oil in the turbo galleries from coking into a solid, crusty mass that plugs the oil transfer ports and starves the turbo bearings of lubrication. (Akin to a heart attack!) Three minutes of cool-down every time, plus the use of clean, fresh oil, prevents all of these problems and defines Best Practices for turbo operation,
BWZ was Imported about 25 years ago from an estate sale and has been owned by one pilot ever since. The original US Logbooks were lost and the widow of the previous owner was unable to find them. As we all know, this is an all-too-common problem and a good argument for always keeping the logbooks physically with the aircraft or with a trusted mechanic known to the family. The good news is that the present Owner has all 25 years worth of Canadian Logbooks and has been a regular Parts customer of Lake Central, though the aircraft has spent the majority of its life based out of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. It is presently hangared at Villeneuve Airport (CZVL) northwest of Edmonton.
C-FBWZ has had extensive regular maintenance by knowledgeable AME’s who actually own and fly their own LAKE Aircraft. Our Parts sales logs show plenty of new parts installed on a regular basis, which is a good way to track both the quality and quantity of field maintenance that an individual aircraft has been receiving. The Aircraft Owner is a meticulous, older fellow who has enjoyed some fantastic fishing in a beautiful but harsh landscape. He knows the critical importance of keeping this aircraft in tip-top condition, and has never been one to allow a “snag list” to accumulate. If it needed anything, it got it without delay or equivocation. These are always the best Owners and the best aircraft.
This great Turbo Buc is not an avionics queen, she is simply equipped to go fishing in the back country on a regular basis. Everything in the panel works and is reliable. That’s what counts when you have hundreds of miles of rocks, trees and water in all directions…and no other people.
The time has come for BWZ to become part of the new adventures of a new Owner and Lake Steward.
